The popular spam call-blocking app Truecaller identifies that spam calls are a growing problem in South Africa.
Truecaller says that South Africa is their fastest growing market and that they are planning to expand their presence.
Ted Nelson, the company's Chief Commercial Officer, spoke to Cape Talk about the popularity of Truecaller, which has strong growth in numbers in Africa.
What is Truecaller?
The Truecaller app brags with about 250 million users worldwide, it identifies and blocks spammers/spam numbers. The app also identifies the caller ID of private numbers and gives users the option to block incoming calls for identified spammers. The app is fast learning due to the option added where users can report numbers that haven't been identified as spam numbers yet. Truecaller also hosts an anti SMS spam feature which has proven to be very handy.
“Truecaller was born out of this uncertainty. We wanted to make it possible for you to know who’s trying to contact you and also tell you when not to pick up,” said the company.
Truecaller studied their data and found that South Africa is a breeding ground for unwanted spam calls. It therefore does not come as a surprise that South African smartphone users seek Spam call-blocking services/apps.
The need is certain. Out of Truecaller's 250 million worldwide users, 20% of those users are South Africans. Nelson said that those numbers are showing strong growth patterns and to support this growth, Truecaller is setting up an office in Cape Town to increase its presence in the region.
