The Municipality of Stellenbosch urges residents to challenge the "87 litres per person per day" guideline and use less than 87 litres per person per day, in efforts to avoid day zero.

The Stellenbosch Municipality will be implementing stricter water restrictions from 1 February. Level 6 water restrictions will be applied to the greater Stellenbosch area.
This is in response to The City of Cape Town moving to level 6B and restricting residents to 50 litres of water per person per day.
With the city's main water supply dams laying low at a 27.2% level, there are no more than 80 days until "Day Zero": the day the taps run dry.
The municipality says they are still deciding on moving to water restriction level 6B with the City of Cape Town on 1 February.
What is Stellenbosch doing to avoid day zero?
Apart from keeping local residents informed about water restrictions, the Stelenbosch council devised and approved a drought management plan in June 2017. The plan makes R45 million available to plans of sourcing additional groundwater and purification plants for boreholes.
Has it been successful?
The municipality is already sourcing thousands of megalitres of water per day and has advanced plans in place to feed additional water into the water grid.
Further plans.
Stellenbosch intends to take Klapmuts, Franschhoek and Dwarsrivier off the Wemmershoek water system, and connect it to their own water system by the end of March.
