The first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup of the season kicked off in Stellenbosch this past weekend. Coetzenburg hosted this breathtaking course which gave the riders a few hard turns and well difficult tasks. "Nowhere to hide in the pain cave", Bianca Haw

Spectators, myself included, dirtied their feet from one end of the course to the other to find the best view of the riders flying by. The course was very accompanying for spectators and we could see every piece of the action. Note: If Stellenbosch were to host the event again, skip sandals - as they gather more dirt and dust than what the riders do.
The course was a rough 4.4km long, consisting of adrenalin pumping drops and obstacles such as the "Wine Barrel", "Pickup Sticks", and "Varsity Dropout".
The amount of laps varied for each event. There were four events in total: Women U23, Men U23, Women Elite, Men Elite. The Women U23 race, which consisted of 5 laps, was won by Malene Degn with a time of 1:18:52.

After the Women U23, the Men U23 came up and Petter Fagerhaug comfortably won this six-lap race with a time of 1:18:23.

Annika Langvad dominated the six-lap Elite Woman's race with a time of 1:33:14, after gaining control in the final lap. SA's national champ Mariske Strauss "was happy" with how the event played out, she finished in a well deserved 28th place.
New Zealander, Samuel Gaze caused stirred a bit of upset after he won world champion Nino Schurter in a sprint finish. Frisson sparked as the two battled it out in the last few meters after riding competitively close to each other during the race. Gaze won with a time of 1:30:14.
